Hey South Shore, this is the big one. America's 250th, a Fourth of July that only comes around once in several lifetimes, and the whole neighborhood is throwing a party from Babylon to Patchogue. Fireworks are set to go up over the Great South Bay, the Lions are lining up their parade down Main Street, and the vineyards and beaches are open all weekend long.

One real note before you make plans: a serious heatwave is landing right on the holiday. Friday and Saturday push into the high 90s, with a heat index that could hit 100 to 105. Drink water, find shade, take the midday sun slow, and check on elderly neighbors. Never leave a kid or a pet in a hot car. Saturday the 4th also carries a decent chance of afternoon thunderstorms, so have a backup plan and check the sky before you head out for fireworks.

We're proud of this community, and this is the weekend to celebrate hard and look out for each other at the same time. To everyone across the South Shore, happy Fourth and a happy 250th. Now let's get into it.
