Hey South Shore, Memorial Day weekend came in wet. The rain pushed parades indoors, canceled ceremonies that have been on the calendar for decades, and rerouted the Bay Shore-Brightwaters parade among others. Plans got washed out, but the day still belonged to the people we lost. Neighbors still gathered. Flags still went up. The South Shore still found a way to honor it.

This weekend looks like the real start of summer. Thursday through Sunday gives us the carnival rolling into the South Shore Mall, a tribute act selling out venues across the country landing in Oakdale, and Islip's biggest street party of the year shutting down Main Street on Sunday. Plus a pop culture takeover at the library, a free pollinator planting in Patchogue, and the first Sunday of the Patchogue Farmers Market season.

Even in the rain, the South Shore showed up this weekend, the way it always does. The neighbors who tip us off to a show, the volunteers who line a route rain or shine, the small rooms betting on a Friday night: they're the reason there's anything to write about here. Now let's get into it.
